What Is Head Start?

What is happening in our classrooms? Little hands busy learning and exploring, minds growing and developing. “Play is children’s work!” As children play they are learning skills that will prepare them for kindergarten and so much more. Teachers provide small group and large group experiences around in-depth investigations. What are they investigating? Topics that are relevant to everyday life. Whether it’s pets, building, sand, light, or trees, children are learning math, literacy, and social skills through the studies.

Unwavering Philosophy

Head Start is an early childhood education model committed to the whole child. We provide a well-rounded classroom experience centered around social-emotional learning and offer support to children and families beyond the classroom, from before birth to age 5. Our approach reflects a national commitment to providing all children the foundation they need to thrive both inside the classroom and in the wider world. Tailored for children from eligible families, everything we do is rooted in the unwavering philosophy that where you come from shouldn’t stand in the way of where you’re going.

We truly cherished our son’s experience at Head Start. The teachers were not only kind and compassionate, but we also witnessed remarkable growth in his social, motor, and verbal skills. Knowing he was learning in a safe and nurturing environment made all the difference for us.

One thing that makes Head Start unique is our commitment to providing children and families with comprehensive services to support children’s educational development. As part of these services, NeighborImpact Head Start and Early Head Start promote children’s well-being by providing high-quality health screenings through trained staff and community partnerships.

Health screenings include hearing and vision screenings, growth assessments provided by Deschutes County WIC, and dental screenings provided by Advantage Dental.

Last year, the health services team, in conjunction with our community partners, completed 2,531 health screenings. As a result of these screenings, seven children were referred for hearing concerns, 160 children were found to have vision impairments, and 116 children were identified as having dental needs.

Screenings that identify concerns receive referrals for formal evaluations and assistance connecting with community health providers. Through high-quality health screenings and strong community partnerships, our health team is helping to ensure every child is ready and able to be successful in their educational future!

Family engagement is a collaborative and strengths-based process in which staff, families, and children build positive and goal-oriented relationships. In NeighborImpact Head Start, our staff work with families to promote positive parent-child relationships, overall family well-being, and healthy child development.

The Family Partnership process honors and supports the strengths and opportunities for growth in each family. Additionally, we provide opportunities for families to connect with fun family engagement events including Family Nights, Socializations, family engagement committee events, and more!

School readiness is best supported when the family is supported as a whole. In our program, we view parents and other family members as their child’s first and most vital teacher. Families who are involved in their child’s education, who are connected to their community, are safe and healthy, are actively engaged in their child’s transitions, and act as leaders and advocates for their family and in their community have more positive outcomes for their children in terms of success in school and life.
